New light-sport category aircraft can be faster, heavier and more capable than any LSA before them.
Effective July 24, 2026, the FAA replaced the old light-sport aircraft definition in 14 CFR §1.1 with a new light-sport category aircraft airworthiness certification. This is a separate regulatory question from Sport Pilot privileges — it governs what manufacturers can build and certify, not who can fly it.
What's new for these aircraft
- No maximum takeoff weight — replacing the old 1,320-pound cap
- Up to four seats, more cabin space, and more fuel capacity than the old LSA spec allowed
- A top speed (Vh) of up to 250 knots — a dramatic increase over legacy LSA performance
- New propulsion types, including turbine engines and electric motors
- New categories of light-sport aircraft, including gyroplanes, rotorcraft and powered-lift designs
A nuance worth understanding
Light-sport category aircraft may be certified with a dirty stall speed (VS0) of up to 61 knots calibrated airspeed. That is a different, higher number than the 59-knot clean stall speed (VS1) that governs what a Sport Pilot is actually allowed to fly under §61.316. In other words: an aircraft can be built and certified as a light-sport category aircraft without every Sport Pilot being legally able to fly it. A new, more capable MOSAIC aircraft built near the top of its performance envelope may only be flyable by a pilot exercising Private, Commercial or ATP privileges — not by a Sport Pilot. This is exactly the kind of detail that matters before you buy, insure or plan to fly one of these aircraft.
Two very different pilot populations, one aircraft
The same new MOSAIC aircraft can end up in the hands of two very different pilots. A Private Pilot flying on a Class 3 medical or BasicMed faces none of the restrictions above — full use of the seats, night flight, and whatever performance the aircraft is certified for. A Sport Pilot flying the identical airplane is still bound by the one-passenger limit, day-VFR unless medically qualified and trained for night, and the training and endorsement requirements for any retractable gear, controllable-pitch propeller, or high-performance features — assuming the specific aircraft even falls within the Sport Pilot's 59-knot ceiling in the first place.
What this means for insurance
These are new aircraft with little to no loss history yet, often carrying meaningfully higher hull values than a legacy two-seat LSA — and two distinct pilot populations that may fly the same airframe under very different privilege and medical bases. We don't yet have a settled market answer for exactly how carriers will price and structure coverage as this category matures, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we can do is help you think through the aircraft, the pilot, and the mission clearly before you're in a renewal deadline or a purchase decision with no time to sort it out.
